Awareness of Abundance

an excerpt from Live Beautifully:  A Book to Sit With, by Doris Wedige

Reflections on a controlled burn...
On my way into town I descend a hill.  The elevated road offers me a great vantage point to appreciate the beauty of the valley and the creek that runs through it.
About a month ago someone did a controlled burn.  The entire landscape was changed to a large expanse of black.  I wondered what the future would hold for this beautiful natural area.  Would it come back a cesspool of weeds?  We live on a similar area of land and I considered just for a moment that we too could do a controlled burn.  But I quickly dismissed the thought for fear of what the result would be.  I felt better just leaving things as they were.  Who knows what kind of troubles doing something like that might entail!
It’s a month later and on my trips to town I look out at the area where they did the burn and see a beautiful expanse of lush green.  Absolutely gorgeous green.  There is not one indication of the burn that happened just a month ago.  The whole area looks fresh and renewed.
As I drove past last night I pondered the thought of doing a controlled burn on my own self.  I pondered what it would be like to burn away my past.  What would it be like to start with a clean slate?
If I cleared away my past, would I too experience a burst of new growth?  Would it open me up to new possibilities?  To new growth?  How many of us would rather keep the status quo than risk the uncertainty of something different?
I’m ready for a controlled burn.  I’m ready to start anew.  I’m ready to burn away the past and let it be nourishment for the rich soil from which my future will grow.
