Reflections on Unity…

"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their sense slowly, and one by one."  Charles Mackay
(This is an excerpt from Live Beautifully: A Book to Sit With)

I just ran an errand.  It’s an autumn day.  On the way home I drove down a country road with yellowed corn creating walls alongside me and an open blue sky above.  I came upon a flock of blackbirds flying over the cornfield as graceful and moving as the dance of the sugar plum fairies.

I’ve been so enamored by blackbirds lately.  They fly in flocks at this time of year.  They can all be perched in trees in my backyard, literally hundreds of them and all at one time they seem to decide to get up and fly to another destination.  You would think that they would be flying into each other, colliding.  You would think that there would be confusion as to which way they are going to go.

But there isn’t.  They seem to operate as individual birds and yet also as one flock.  The flock seems to have one mind and they all seem to have access to this one mind.

If we could stand back from mankind, would we too look like a flock?  Individuals part of a collective Whole?  All moving in unison towards a common destination?

We feel so alone, so isolated in our illusion of separateness.  Have we lost the knowing of our Oneness?  Are we individual birds within a beautiful flock ignorant of our Unity?  Thoughts and feelings of separateness and isolation being not our reality, but a result of our ignorance?

Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.   Philippians 4:2
I intend to sense the truth of the Oneness of All.
I accept that we have largely lost the knowledge of our Oneness...  I relinquish beliefs in thoughts of being alone…  I relinquish beliefs in thoughts of being separate…  I relinquish beliefs in thoughts of being incomplete…  I relinquish beliefs in thoughts of needing someone…  I dream of the Truth of our Oneness being revealed in our hearts…  With peace and love I intend to extend Compassion to every member of our flock, so that we might recall the Love that we have strayed from and once again remember our Oneness…   I am grateful for the pain of separation to be slowly receding, I am.
